The Fall of Galliano
It seems like something tragic happens every year in the fashion industry. Last year Alexander McQueen committed suicide, and now John Galliano gets fired from Christian Dior. Let us backtrack though. Apparently, John Galliano said some very inappropriate anti-Semitic remarks at a Paris bar. It should be noted though that all of his remarks were caught on video—which has been released online. In France it is against the law to say any racial comments in such manner, and will lead to six to twelve months in prison. Galliano was in fact arrested because of these drunken remarks, and made no comment about his remarks. Galliano’s case is expected to be tried around the second quarter.
Later in the week, Dior renounced the designer and put him on probation; meaning, that he was suspended from working with the brand. Yet, due to quite a few lash outs and bad publicity for the overall brand, Galliano is now fired from Dior.
SO, how do I feel about all of this? Well first of all, I am part Jewish so this is kind of weird for me. Granted, I am not super Jewish…probably like one eighth? But, to actually hear one of my favorite designers say remarks such as those makes me quite depressed. I have had so much respect for Galliano—he was one of my favorite Couturiers. But now, I really don’t know how I feel towards him. I know it was a drunken rant, but really dude are you going to be racist in such modern times? I am positive this is going to put a strain on the Dior brand. Quite frankly, I don’t know how I feel towards Dior anymore. Like do I want to buy their products? I know it’s not the brand’s fault, but even so. Also, I want to know if Galliano is really fired. Now that is interesting.
